Last November marked the release of Visual MODFLOW Flex 2014.1 which introduced support for MODFLOW-USG unstructured grids. Since then, the simulations software development team at Schlumberger Water Services has been working on developing new features for the next release which is scheduled for June. Most of the development work has been focused around bringing popular features from the classic interface into the Visual MODFLOW Flex interface, improving usability and extending support for other MODFLOW-USG grid types. Here is a brief preview of what is planned for Visual MODFLOW Flex in 2014.

New Features and Improvements for Visual MODFLOW Flex 2014.2 (June 2014)

  • Define Zone Budget zones using GIS shape objects
  • Export chart data to CSV file, for analysis with MS Excel
  • Define Wall (HFB) boundary condition
  • Improved methods for define particles:
    • assign with points, assign circle around wells, to multiple layers, etc.
    • delete selected, specified layers, all layers
  • Support for rotated numerical grids
  • Show water table (plan, XS and 3D view)
  • Improved usability for workflows (better defaults when importing models or generating numerical models from conceptual models)

New Features and Improvements for Visual MODFLOW Flex 2015.1 (November 2014)

  • MODFLOW-SURFACT v4, flow and transport
  • MODFLOW-USG, QuadTree grid support
  • MODFLOW-USG, CLN package for wells
  • Convert structured MODFLOW-2000/2005 models to MODFLOW-USG Grids (Voronoi and QuadTree Grids)
